Vulnerable Brian is such a struggle for me, not because I don't think he can be, but because he's got such an aversion to displaying how vulnerable he actually is, given the right catalyst (and his family certainly qualifies).
As I approached this story (I've had the first page or so, with the funeral dialogue, written for about 4 years with nowhere to go), there were 2 things I knew I wanted: 1) Brian to have some sort of breakdown and 2) Deb to be the one who prompted it. It didn't feel "accurate" that Justin would spark the initial outpouring of emotion -- or even Michael, who was there for Brian when Jack died. (Plus Debbie & Brian lends itself to all sorts of other opportunities). But I knew it was also important for Justin to play a role in the "new normal" of their relationship (as I see it), post-canon.
